Ho Math and Chess, based in Canada, is the world only child education franchise dedicated to teaching children math through the use of chess and puzzles. Ho Math and Chess thinks children learn best while having fun. Its teaching method has been developed from its inception using this mission statement.

Based on many research reports and also our own teaching experience, we know that when working on math worksheets, most children prefer math and games mixed style. The problem is there is no such commercial product existing until Ho Math and Chess produced many world's first and innovative math, chess, and puzzles integrated workbooks. One of these Ho Math and Chess' flagship products is Frankho Puzzle.

Ho Math and Chess Method

The  Ho Math and Chess method, developed by a Canadian math teacher Frank Ho [1], is a mathematics teaching method by integrating chess and puzzles into mathematics curriculum.

History

Frank Ho taught chess to his son Andrew when he was 5 years old[2]. Andrew was the Canadian junior chess champion at age 14[3] and later was awarded FIDE chess master [4].

In 1995, Ho was intrigued by the relationship between chess and math and took the initiative to write a math and chess integrated workbook entitled Mathematical Chess Puzzles for Juniors (ISBN 0-9683967-0-4, library catalogue number QA95.H6 1998 j793.7’4). The theory basis of Ho’s math and chess teaching method was published in the official Journal of the British Columbia Association of Mathematics Teachers in Canada[5].

The Program

Ho believes children learn best while having fun, so he integrated chess and puzzles into math teaching, this way children learn math, chess, and puzzles all at the same time and children also have the opportunities to work on math, chess, and puzzles integrated worksheets. Ho invented Frankho Maze and Frank Ho Puzzle [6]. He also invented a chess teaching set so that children as young as 4 years old can learn chess with ease. The concept about this chess set is published in [5].

Ho Math and Chess learning centre

In 1995, Ho opened his first  Ho Math and Chess learning centre in Vancouver, Canada and after 2004,  Ho Math and Chess began to open around the world [7].

Frankho Puzzle™ (Canada copyright 1069744, ISBN 978-0-9739011-2-2) Introduction

Ho Math and Chess created the world's first math, chess, and puzzles integrated workbooks for children age 4 and up. This copyrighted trademarked Frankho Puzzle workbook was created using Ho Math and Chess' proprietary technology.

Frankho Puzzle sets it self apart form all other puzzle books on one point that is Frankho Puzzle is more than just a puzzle workbook; it is a puzzle workbook which combines math, logic, chess, puzzles all in one.

Many educators have tried hard to come up with ideas on how to make math learning fun, the most apparent way of doing this is by integrating games with math and this often is done by using computer software. The drawback is that students lose the opportunity of using pencil and paper, teachers do not see how students had troubles in comping up with solutions and the interactive dialog between humans is also lost. Although Frankho Puzzle could also be computerized, it was invented for students to use paper and pencil.

Frankho Puzzle was invented by Mr. Frank Ho, a Canadian math teacher, because his son Andrew was interested in learning chess when he was 5 years old. Frank Ho found that most children do not like to work on traditional math worksheets. Lots of traditional worksheets just require children to do tons of computations and this really bored children. Are there any other ways that math can be taught more fun and enjoyable? After inventing the math, chess, and puzzles worksheets, Frank found that this kind of integrated worksheets become a popular product asked by children themselves.

Frankho Puzzle is a product produced because Frank discovered there was a need for it.

Today's children live in a multi-media world, they receive information from all sorts of media. They also gather data and information from multi-sources. This kind of learning environment has not been reflected upon the math worksheets. Frankho Puzzle requires children to search data through moves of chess and logic, to analyze information and then to draw conclusions; this kind of thinking trains children's eye-hand-brain coordination, improves their critical thinking skills, and at the same time strengthen children's math computation ability. Children enjoys more when working on Frankho Puzzle and it is also fun.

In a after-school learning centre environment, it is no longer enough to say to children that your math marks will improve if you come to learning centre. Instead, it is the fun and interesting for children to learn that keeps children to continuously come to Ho Math and Chess learning centre to learn math, chess, and puzzles.
